Announcing Our 8th Annual Hair Show... Introducing Keyative Styles: Keyanna and Toni

Welcome to our 8th Annual Hair Show featuring Toni and Keyanna from Keyative Styles!!!!! This is an honor for us to feature the famous Toni and Key! We had the opportunity to interview them so see what they had to say and show some love!

Q1
Please introduce yourself and your lovely Diva... Does your Diva have any special hobbies, interests or participate in any activities that she is partial to? Anything she doesn't care for much?

My name is Toni and I have am the proud momma to a 6 year old little girl named Keyanna. Keyanna is mixed with Italian, African American, and Native American. She is very outgoing, she loves to make people laugh and loves to be the center of attention. Ever since she was a baby she has loved music and dancing. She plays the keyboard, some guitar, and is hoping Santa will bring her a drum set this year! Her dream is to be on Disney’s Shake It Up one day. Keyanna is also enrolled in a local gymnastics program and loves it, and she plans on joining the basketball team soon.

Q2
Do you have a specific hair regime which you follow for your daughter? Do you have one for yourself? Please detail.

We try to stick to a hair routine but it changes a lot, because our schedules are so busy. Currently, on unstyled hair, I try to Co-wash her hair every other night, and shampoo/deep condition once a week. Every morning I spray and detangle Keyanna’s hair with a moisturizer/conditioner mix, and again at night on days we don’t wash. If her hair is in braids or twists I simply spray with our conditioner mix 2x a day and do a co-wash every 3-4 days. She also sleeps with a satin bonnet to protect her hair at night.

Q3
What are some of your favorite products, hair tools, accessories and other pertinent hair items?

OK, so first let me start off by saying I am a total “product Junkie”. Lol. With that being said, some of our all time favorite products are Bee Mine Luscious Moisturizer, Bee Mine Curly Butter, Bruce’s Babes Hair & Body Butter, Bruce’s Babes Shake ‘N Shampoo, Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie, and DevaCurl No-poo, and Pooka Pure and Simple Nectar Hair Oil. Our Favorite accessories? Key is a major girly-girl, she loves bows, beads, barrettes, and her Sidewinders.
As far as tools go we really just use a basic Conair brush, and a rat tail comb.

Q4
Looking back to the beginning of your daughters hair journey what could you say that you've learned that got you to the point that you’re at now with what you do/use and how you do/use it to properly care for your daughters hair?

In the beginning of our hair journey I used products on my daughters hair that did more damage than good, Incorporating natural products into our hair routine has helped a lot.. Her hair is much healthier and so much easier to work with.

Q5
Are there any products in your product hall of shame? Any that you do not recommend?

A few summers ago I had heard good things about Cantu Shea Butter, so we decided to try it... Total fail on Keyanna’s hair. It dried her hair out horribly. I put that one in the cabinet of shame. Everyones hair is different, what worked for others didn’t work for us, but that doesn’t mean it wont work for you. Just experiment with trying new products until you find “the one”.

Q6
Is there any styling method or technique that you have yet to master? Anything new brewing for the future?

I can not for the life of me do a flat rope twist, or 3 strand twists. But I do have a few idea’s brewing for future styles you’ll have to wait to see those.

Q7
Have you came across any road blocks along Key's hair journey? Please detail...

I guess really the only road block we have hit is dealing with my perfectionism. I would start on a style and if the parts weren’t exactly right, or if it wasn’t turning out how I pictured it I would just take it all down. Now I don’t worry about any of that.. Even if things don’t look right while I’m braiding, by the time I finish the style I am always happy with it.

Q8
What is your definition of natural hair? Where do you base it from?

I define natural hair as the hair that grows out of your head. Hair that hasn’t been chemically altered in any way.

Q9
What are your favorite styles to create? What are some of Keys favorites? How long do you usually spend doing hair each time?

My favorite styles to do on Key are unique ones, styles that you really don’t see anybody else rockin’. I love to get creative and use her hair as an outlet for that. Lol. Key’s favorites are cornrowed hearts, braided Mohawks, and pretty much anything with beads.. She loves to swing ‘em!
We usually don’t spend more than 45 minutes doing hair, MOST of our styles we keep it pretty simple. But for the more creative styles we sometimes spend 2 hours or more. The longest style we have done was mini braids and we did it over a 2-3 day period.

Q10
How does Key feel about her hair? What are some things that YOU feel are important for her to know as she builds her own thoughts and feelings about her hair?

Q11
Please describe hair time with your daughter... Does she like to help? What do you allow her to do? What are some of her favorite activities to do while sitting?

Keyanna loves to help during hair time. She usually will put the beads on the beader for me, hand me barrettes, or put the curlformers on the rod for me if we are using those. I also put a movie or her favorite show on to keep her busy, she plays her Leapster Explorer, or we just talk.

Q12
Any suggestions for making hair time an easier or smoother experience for others with children?

Make it fun for them, get them involved, and take breaks when they ask. If their bored and stuck sitting for hours at a time it might start to seem more like a punishment to them, and they will definitely start putting up a fight when its hair time.

Q13
By asking your Diva Key what she likes most about her hair what does she say? What is her reasoning?

“I like that it’s long, and you can do lots of pretty things with it. I like to always show my friends at school when you braid it for me.” -Key

Q14
Are you a self taught artist or were there means of which helped guide you in learning how to care for and style your daughters hair?

I started doing Keyanna’s hair in January 2009, and for the first year I learned everything through trial and error. Then I started coming across hair blogs, and am still learning and finding inspiration through them everyday, as well as through some awesome braiders on my face book page!

Q15
Please share some things about yourself that aren’t mentioned above, likes/dislikes, hobbies, interests, fun facts, what sparked your interest in natural hair… ETC

Well, I just recently built up enough confidence to start braiding other peoples hair (other than key’s) lol. I am considering going to school for hair design and making a career of this.

Announcing Our 7th Annual Hair Show Featuring Curly Girl Braids And More

Welcome to our Annual Hair Show where we show case our feature participants! Introducing Brittany and her two beautiful daughters Brea and Me'ana...

Q1
Please introduce yourself and your lovely Diva daughters... Do they have any special hobbies, interests or participate in any activities that they are partial to? Anything they dislike?

Hi my name is Brittany, I am a stay at home mom to 2 wonderful daughters, Brea and Me'ana. Brea is 4 years old and she is in preschool. She loves to paint and color. She also loves to do her dolls hair. Me'ana loves to write the letter M and she loves to play in lotion and make up and she loves to play babies. They both love riding bikes and jumping on the trampoline and to swing too.
Q2
How long have you been styling the girls hair?

I have been doing Brea's hair since she was 6 months old. (she has always had alot of hair). I have been doing Me'ana's hair since she was about 18 months old. She was born with alot of hair then it started shedding.

Q3
Do you have a specific hair regime which you follow for your daughter's? Do you have one for yourself? Please detail.

I wash Brea's and Me'ana's scalp every other day with Herbal Essences Hello Hydration shampoo and conditioner. I leave the conditioner on about 10 Min's. Then wash it out. After i towel dry their hair i use some wonderful products from Nina Rae, she makes her own products. I use her hair butter on their scalp and hair and then i seal in the moisture with Nina Rae's hair oil.

Q4
What are some of your favorite products, hair tools, accessories and other pertinent hair items?

So far my favorite products are Nina Rae's hair butter and hair oil. I also like the curly set from Frizzoff. I am currently using that kit, I received to review. I love beads and pony balls. I also love the bows i make for my girls too.

Q5
Are there any products in your product hall of shame? Any that you do not recommend?
Please detail.

I do not recommend you to use gorilla monkey snot gel. It is really hard to wash out. I tried it on Me'ana when Brea cut off almost all of her hair and it took me like 4 times to wash her hair to finally get it all out and it made her hair really stiff too.

Q6
Looking back to the beginning of your daughters' hair journeys what can you say that you've learned that helped/inspired you to achieve the level that you’re at now with what you do/use and how you do/use it to properly care for their hair?

In the beginning I didn't know about having to moisturize Brea's hair and I use to wash her hair everyday with what ever I had. Thank god i have a great neighbor that helped me and told me why Brea's hair kept breaking off. She told me i was washing it too much and not using the right kind of products and she also told me to oil the rubber bands and the ends of Brea's hair before i applied beads and rubber bands. This helps alot. I am thankful that i learned this before i had the chance to mess up Me'ana's hair too.

Q7
Is there any styling method or technique that you have yet to master? Anything you are practicing now or would like to try on the girls hair?

I cant do the spiral curl cornrows, but i can do swirls and zigzag one's and also the heart and the half circle one's. I am going to keep practicing eventually i will get it.

Q8
Have you came across any road blocks along the way? If so how did you overcome them?

Yes i have come across a horrible road block, when Brea decided to play hair stylist and cut off almost all of Me'ana's beautiful curls. I over came that by finding new hairstyles to hide the bald spots, as in the top of the picture of Me'ana's hair you can see that there is the short hair that wont go into the pony tail. It isn't that noticeable unless you look closely.

Q9
What is your definition of natural hair? Where do you base it from?

My definition of natural hair is no hair dye and no perms. It is fine to add extensions.

Q10
What are your favorite styles to create? What are some of your daughters' favorites? How long do you usually spend doing hair each time?

I love micro braids on Brea. It is so versatile you can do many things with them. They usually take me about 4 hours to do. I love to do Me'ana's hair in a pony connecting mohawk. Brea's favorite hair style is anything with beads. She loves to shake em. Me'ana loves a big bow in her hair she says i am oh so beautiful.

Q11
How do they feel about her hair? What are some things that YOU feel are important for them to know as they build their own thoughts and feelings about their hair?

Brea's loves her wavy hair and she already likes to help me try to fix it. Me'ana

Q12
Please describe hair time with your girls... Does they like to help? What do you allow them to do if so? What are some of their favorite activities to do while sitting?

Yes i let them help. I let them pick the beads or pony and clip colors for there own hair. Brea will hand me Me'ana's hair clips and pony's or she will put the beads on the beader and Me'ana will do the same for Brea too. They both love to watch the Disney channel while getting their hair done.

Q13
Any suggestions for making hair time an easier or smoother experience for others with children?

Sometimes when Brea is cranky and tired i let her go to sleep on a blanket and pillow on the floor then i put her in my lap and do her hair while she is sleeping. Brea is a hard sleeper.

Q14
By asking each of your daughters what they like most about their hair what do they say? What are their individual reasonings?

Brea says I love my long hair and she wants it as long as mine. Me'ana says she loves the color and her curls too.

Q15
Please share some things about yourself that aren’t mentioned above, likes/dislikes, hobbies, interests, fun facts, what sparked your interest in caring for and styling your daughters' hair… ETC

I love sharing my hair care and styles on my blog. I have always liked doing hair. I went to school for doing hair in Chicago but didn't finish. I love to cook and bake with my girls also. I also make my girls bows. I always like to make sure my daughters look beautiful first and then if I have time I do my own hair and make up. If I don't have time I just put my hair in a flipped up pony tail and apply lip gloss and go.

Q16
Rep your blog and social networks! Where can people see more of your amazing and cute styles?

I am including links to my Facebook page, my blog and my twitter too for you all to see more of my hair styles and products reviews and giveaways.

**
Thank you Brittany for participating in our Annual Hair Show! Your girls are adorable and we enjoyed seeing the girls hair styles and getting to know more about you and tid bits from parts of your girls hair journeys and beyond. Your blog is really progressing and its great to see all the new styles you post and whats a great element about it for us is that my daughter has nearly the same hair texture as your girls and when i see styles of all varieties on fellow little hair Diva's that i know i could pull off on my Divas hair type it inspires me to experiment <3 I love to accessorize my daughters hair also she loves beads and Sidewinders the most and lately her fav has been hair bows with her natural curls freely hanging. Thank you for sharing your tips and advice as well! God Bless.

Announcing Our 6th Annual Hair Show Featuring Diva B and Sir M!

Hi! My name is Natalie, I’m the owner & creator of Cocoa Curlz. I have two curly cuties! My daughter, Princess B is 4 yrs old and my son Prince Cai is 2 yrs old. My children are ½ African American, ¼ Native American, and ¼ French/Scottish.

Princess B’s hair type is soft, medium thickness, becomes dry/frizzes quickly, and a mixture of 3A/3B (Troy Polamalu would be the perfect example!). Prince Cai’s hair is very thick, doesn’t frizz but gets a little dry, and is showing a mixture of 2A/2B/2C when wet. We’re in the process of growing his out!

I began styling my daughter’s hair when she was 2, that’s when it became much more curly. Thank God for my big sister, Ty for help! I would also Google for other ideas and tips. Daddy even helps sometimes!
Our hair care routine is very simple. I deep condition twice a month, shampoo once a week, and co-wash in between shampoos when necessary, and apply hair milk every morning. I moved from NJ to northern Ontario, Canada late last year and I live in an area where there is only one place available for AA hair care products, which is almost an hour’s drive away. I decided to make my own natural product line to have something available for others in my community that would be chemical-free.

My biggest pet peeves about hair care are people who have the ‘good/bad hair’ mentality, having hair on your head is plenty good. Seeing little girls with relaxed hair. Like other sensitive subjects, I believe that should be decided by the child & not the parent. You can cause serious damage and burns to the child’s scalp/skin, not to mention blindness if it’s not done properly.
We’ve never had to deal with criticism from others, my daughter has always received compliments from others about her beautiful curls. She absolutely loves her hair and the time we spend together styling. It’s our mommy/daughter time! We pick out a movie with snacks and just enjoy the quiet time.

The products I would recommend to other hair-moms would be anything without SLS, Parabens, & Mineral Oil for the most part. Read the labels and educate yourself as much as you can, options are endless. Cocoa Curlz works very well on my children, but may not work well for another person. Avoid using heated stylers (straighteners, blow dryers, etc.) as much as possible.

Thank you Natalie! For contributing to our annual Hair Show it was a pleasure getting to know you and your dear little ones <3 I must say that both of your children's hair when they were younger was EXACTLY how my Diva R's hair was and it turned out to be exactly how your daughters too! Her hair went through similar transitions and was just as straight as a board and jet black in color when she was born and it has since then transformed into being a reddish brown color with a big mixture of type 2 textures with a smidge of type 3. I bet you never thought their hair would ever curl when they were babies! that's what i thought and was shocked to start seeing crazy all over the place curls appear as Diva R was growing! Diva B and Sir M are just gorgeous! I LOVE how you embrace their cultures and natural hair to the fullest! It is so wonderful to meet fellow mommies who feel that these area's are of utmost importance and that they should be treated as such.

I just love the adorable pic of Sir M with the red shirt and dab of drool! I could just squeeze his little cheeks. Such a cutie and he favors his sister too! Diva B is also gorgeous and her styles are always so cute and girly!

Please check out Natalie's website and online shop Cocoa Curlz and all that she has to offer from her special formulation of Natural Hair Care Products! (Currently she is only shipping throughout Canada but that may change in the future!). While on that thought feel free to "Like" her FB page.

Our 5th Annual Hair Show! Introducing Diva N...

It has been over a month since our last Hair Show and we are excited to get it back in motion especially with our friend Kandy's Daughter "N" from KandyLandKurls!!!!!

Meet N <3

Brief Bio

N is 6 years old, she is half African American and Puerto Rican. Her hair type is mostly 3c mixed with 4a.
How and When you got started styling hair

I learned how to braid from my aunts, as a child. I would practice on my American Doll Addy, and Barbies. I was very scissor happy on my dolls :( and learned through trial and error. But it wasn't until I was 12 that I learned the hard way on my own hair. From dye, hot combs, gels, to chemicals. I experimented with a little bit of everything lol.
Hair care Routine/Pet peeves
I wash N's hair once a week, every weekend. I deep condition her hair every other wash, I use a rinse out conditioner also.
I try to make sure her hair is in some form of braids or twists, which helps to prevent knotting in the morning (she is a wild sleeper) I also try my best to put a satin scarf on her head (it tends to come off at night & I'm forgetful sometimes) but I do try to use it daily.
I give N a hot oil treatment, or I should say, warm oil treatment, once every month or every other just to make sure her hair is well oiled.
N receives a egg treatment, once a month. All I have to do is simply crack 2 raw eggs into a bowl and beat them. Then I apply the eggs to her dry hair and I let it sit for approx. 10 mins. Then I wash it out with warm/cold water and continue with shampooing. (FYI -it's important to use cold water, to prevent scrambled eggs in the hair..yucky)
Swimming- I make sure she has a leave in conditioner in her hair and I try to co-wash the next day to get the salt/chlorine out of her hair.
Products we are currently using: These products are in our current regimen, and may change as we try other products.
Shampoo- Bee Mine Botanical Moisturizing Shampoo/ Shea Moisture Shampoo.
Conditioners- Suave Naturals Almond and Shea Butter Conditioner(I rinse this out)/ Organix Coconut Milk Conditioner (I use it as a leave in as well and in my spray bottle.)
Deep Conditioner- Organix Coconut Milk /Bee Mine (Bee-U-Ti-Ful) Moisturizing Deep Conditioner.(I leave it on for 20 mins, with a shower cap and hot towel, then wash it out.)
Oils- Coconut Oil & Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Essential oils- Peppermint Oil & Jojoba Oil.
Styling Products- Bee Mine Curly Butter, Shea Moisture Curl & Style Milk.
Moisturizer- Bee Mine Luscious Moisturizer, Bee Mine Hair and Scalp Moisturizer, Bee Mine Juicy Spritz and My Homemade Shea Butter Mix (to seal-in moisture).
Likes/Dislikes regarding hair products

I love Bee Mine products for N's hair, Organix Coconut Milk Conditioner, and our Shea Butter Mix. I dislike the Denman Brush on her hair, even after modifying it, her hair would wrap around the brush and snap.
Favorite Activities

N is a yellow belt in Taekwondo. She is also in Girl Scouts, Gymnastics, T-ball, and her Schools Science Club. In the past she was in Ballet, and Beauty Pageants. Our favorite family activity is playing checkers, N is very good and beats her Dad all the time. We also love to wrestle as a family (weird, I know) but even our 1 year old tackles and wrestles at random moments lol.
How do you get your little one to tolerate hair time

If it's wash day or I am doing a style that takes 2 hours or longer, I put on a movie to keep her entertained. But for our shorter styles we talk the entire time. Since she was a baby, she never complained or fussed when getting her hair done.
Here are some gorgeous styles of N's!

N is such a doll! Thank You Kandy for having N on our hair Show! It was a pleasure getting to know more about N and seeing her lovely styles! Im still shocked i haven't had her on our hair Show until now :p Time flies! I don't know how you get anytime to yourself Kandy with Diva N and all of her activities and keeping lil man entertained too! You sure are supermom! I love the family wrestling that is so awesome!!! I think that may be a fun addition into our household! Usually daddy and the kids wrestle while mommy hangs out and gets things done but i now wanna get in the action too!!

Thank you Kandy for this blessed opportunity!

Hope everyone enjoyed this amazing Hair Show! If YOU would like to be featured or have your child(ren) featured on our Hair Show please feel free to email me with the subject title HAIR SHOW and the format to which you would like to be featured with :) Check here for some ideas and our guidelines...

Announcing Our 4th Annual Hair Show!!! Diva G

Welcome welcome to our Hair Show!

This is a very close to home friend of Diva R's, Introducing Diva G!

For this Hair Show i thought it would be cool to showcase her LOVED hair style.
This is a style that i did for her and it was per her request from seeing Diva R's half hawk and half cornrow hairstyle... (Click here to see Diva R's version :)

Hi Diva G!!

Diva G's Mommy wanted me to do Diva G's hair and give her advice on how to care for her daughter's naturally LONG and curly biracially Caucasian and African American blended hair :D I must say that i feel silly because i forgot to take before pictures!!!! But i will next time for sure! Her hair is gorgeous, thick and long!!

Diva G wanted it done soo bad too so i re-created the style that she wanted because that's whats most important to me is that she is happy and has choice in the style she wears and accessories too, so it was really fun and i must say i love doing hair! Natural curlees need to be cherished and worn proudly!
So we jazzed her style up with some beads of her choice too, they were the regular size multi-translucent beads.

Needless to say she was cheesing ear to ear and loving it! The look on her face was priceless and Diva R was sure to compliment her right away saying "Your hair is beautiful!!" :P

Her hair was washed and conditioned with the Silk Element's products, and then moisturized with Bee Mine Luscious Balanced Cream Moisturizer the night before. The following evening i removed the bands, spritzed some distilled water on while i was lightly finger detangling. I Then as i was going i added the Bee Mine Juicy Spritz of ours and her hair just LOVED this spritz! It serious helped to tame her hair throughout styling. I added dabs of Curly Butter here and there as i was cornrowing. I seriously had to detangle the whole time i braided her hair for it being so thick and semi coarse yet semi soft and long. Her ends would get tangled so i had to keep spraying them so that they wouldn't knot up.

I must say that detangling was a slight time absorber, i am usually as quick as i can be when it comes to braiding kiddies hair because i know how they want to be up playing and doing something else but i am also OCD with lineage because sloppy lines mess up the whole style and that wouldn't ever fly coming from me *_* But she was so patient and sat and drew pictures, read books, watched TV and just went with the flow not a complaint in the world! Such a dear blessing!

Diva G is 7 years old, loves school, loves soccer, riding her bike, going to the park and much much more :) Shes a big sister too!

She usually wears two-three ponytails with two strand twists and or/braids. Her mom doesn't know how to cornrow yet but she will in due time :p Ive given her tips already and am happily helping her along the way with her two daughters hair journeys so that she can properly care for her little ones hair :) I'm excited because i love sharing the wealth!

Not to mention Mommy E is a friend of mine :) It works out because Diva R and Diva G are friends too!

More to come in the future about Diva G and her styles.

She has such lovely curls :) Cant wait to feature her naturally flowing long curlees!!!

What do you think? and How long do you think this would this have taken you with LONG super tangle prone hair?

*Days later she is still rocking it!!!* YAY and Whippin her hair like Willow!!!!

Who wants to be featured next Monday???? Email me within!!!

Announcing Our 3rd Annual Hair Show, Introducing Dominique-Alexis!!

Hey everyone here is our 3rd Annual Hair Show and on the show this week is Dominique-Alexis! She is the creator of www.natural-hair-care-info.com

Thank you for allowing me to be on your blog. I’ve always enjoyed seeing other people’s guest posts so it’s really cool to do one myself.
Bio: My name’s Dominique-Alexis and my younger sister’s nickname is Bunny. She turned nine years old in March and is on the Shining Stars Gymnastics Competitive Team. She loves gymnastics, writing songs and singing. We live in the south and come from a very outdoors-y family. I’ve always known how to braid hair but only learn how to cornrow a couple years back. Bunny and I spend most of our time in school, the music school, volunteering at the zoo, in the gym or outside, which is why neither of us ever wear afros or twist outs. Flat twists, cornrows, and twists are the usual styles due to tumbling in the gym and outdoor humidity.

Our Hair Types: 3C & 4A for both of us. We have the same curl pattern but she seems to have more hair per square inch so you’d never know it :)

Race: African-American/Black
How and when I got started styling Hair: About three years ago. Simply because someone needed to do it (Bunny and I have four other biological sisters with natural hair so it was a handful on our mom to have so many heads to braid) and I really enjoy doing hair. (I’m hoping to get my braiding license soon!)

Hair care routine: I usually put on a movie like Up, Despicable Me, Megamind or something like that for her. Sometimes we’ll listen to music or she’ll play the piano. ANYTHING to distract her. I wash her hair once a week in the afternoon (adding conditioner before and after the shampoo goes in so I don’t strip her hair) then leave it to stretch so it’s mostly dry before bed. The next day I’ll comb her hair through, moisturize it and style it. Sometimes I’ll throw a co wash/no poo or two into the routine, depending on how dirty she gets her hair. As far as styles go, I have no idea how it’ll turn out until it’s finished.
I recently stopped using Herbal Essence shampoos because of how much it strips her hair and have started using Honey & Almond Moisture Whip Shampoo by Naked. Her hair loves it! Whatever conditioner is on sale or is in the bathroom is what I’ll use to detangle and I’ll leave a little bit in her hair to soften. Something else I do is moisturizer her hair nightly before I wrap it so it’ll still look pretty in the morning.

Likes/dislikes regarding hair/products/accessories or advice: My advice to anyone and everyone would be not to get caught up in putting a bunch of beads or bobbles in your little ones hair that can lead to hair damage and breakage. Instead, take the time to make the parts neat or by getting creative with cornrows instead. Neat hair is pretty; it doesn’t have to be covered with bows and stuff. It can be, but it doesn’t have to be.

Favorite family activities/hobbies/interests: Family time, being outside, camping, horseback riding, working on my site, watching the fire with the family, playing with the dogs. I’m pretty live in the moment I guess.

How do you get your little one to tolerate hair time? I get people (sisters/friends) to stay still by being really gentle, this makes it a positive experience. I’ll put the TV on or let her use the computer or give her a snack or a toy. I ALWAYS try to be VERY GENTLE and now she’s learned to love hair time. A quick tip is not to stop your daughter or son from having fun with their friends or their game cube thing or whatever it’s called :) to do their hair, because then they’ll hate hair time.

Thank you Dominique for participating on our Hair Show, it was an honor being able to display your art work and learn about the artist behind the scene. I must highlight the positivity displayed from Miss Dominique-Alexis, through my getting to know her i have gained such an inspiration from just conversing with her that i have to share!!

I couldn't believe she is 15 when i read that in a previous blog interview because her demeanor, devotion and dedication on the side of her family closeness just blew me away. Most 15 year olds are just the opposite of Miss D and are off doing their own thing. I believe that Dominique-Alexis is a wonderful inspiration for all tweens-teens out there, family is first, school and getting good grades being secondary are not options but Duties to her. As a young person it is crucial and important to put family and school over any and all things, and even as you age family is always top priority unconditionally.

Usually one doesn't learn how to or how hard it is to manage a household until you've become an adult yourself, but Dominique has the drive and initiative beyond words and there seems to be no such thing as hard to her, its just so touching to see her levels of care and positivity towards her helping her Mother with her sisters and in general. YAY Dominique for lack of better words! Kudo's

Check out her lovely Natural Hair Care site it is PACKED with EVERYTHING one would want to learn, see or be inspired by. There are tutorials of ALL KINDS, picture demonstrations, many gorgeous styles, information and much more!!

Announcing Our 2nd Annual Hair Show.... The Allen Family

Meet The Allen Family…

Thanks for considering us for your Hair Show, I love your blog :)

My name is Tavia and I'm a mom of three (2 boys and a girl). All three have beautiful hair imho, the three of them have the same hair type anywhere from a 2c-3b depending on which part of their hair you're looking at :) The boys are 9 (J1) and 3 (J3) years old, and my daughter is 6 (J2). The kids are mixed ethnicity, black, creole, irish. And they've got it from both sides, my husband and myself.
I'll focus on my daughter J2, cuz there's not much to my boys' hair care routine. I've recently found some blogs (including yours) that focus on hair care, emphasis on "care." I have always just flat-ironed/pressed my own 3c/4a hair. Whenever it wasn't straightened I'd slap some hair gel on it and call it a day. Sadly, I treated my daughter's hair the same as mine. I combed it but didn't really care for it. I'd wash/ condition and just put it in ponytails. But now I'm realizing we can do so much more!

This hair care routine is literally about a week old because as I said, I'm just learning how to really care for curly hair. We're doing a shampoo once a week (gotta buy sulfate-free, just found that out too!) Conditioning with finger-detangling (another newbie for me), and then a wide-toothed comb. Leaving conditioner on for at least 10-15 minutes before rinsing. I then apply some leave-in conditioner and either band or braid her hair for bed. In the morning I refresh with a little water and leave-in conditioner. If I'm leaving her hair out I'll use Kinky Curly Curling Custard. We're planning on throwing in a no-poo/co-wash once during the week. This whole routine will be a work-in-progress as I figure out what works and what doesn't. But I gotta say, she is a BIG fan of the finger de-tangling before the combing out. BIG fan!

I really love what kinky curly is doing for her hair. It's so soft and smooth (no more crunchy gel)! I dislike my Herbal Essences shampoo which I found out has sulfates all over the place and which I previously loved :( Suggestions for a new shampoo are welcome! Preferably one not too exotic and that I can just find at a regular store!

We are a musical family. I was a music major in college, J1 plays electric guitar and J2 has recently started piano lessons. But one of our favorite things to do as a family is to go swimming . We are a bunch of fish, and this has always been a challenge as far as hair care is concerned. The plan will be rinse before and c0-wash after. We'll see how it goes during swim lessons this summer!

Hair time is not my daughter's favorite time I must admit. Watching Dancing with the Stars and American Idol does help! Usually she's happy with some little knick-knacks or her nintendo ds to play with. Distraction is the key for her. She's not happy during the process but she's always happy with the end result. She loves to look cute :)

Here is an amazing twisted braid style for lack of better words! and it is just a chart topper!!!

Here is J2 with Kinky Curly Products in her hair LOOK at those majorly defined bouncy curls!:)

(Sidenote: Just wanted to mention that NONE of the hairstyles pictured here are of my own invention. I've seen them all on other blogs like beadsbraidsbeyond and princesshairstyles.)
We just want to extend a huge thank you Tavia for introducing your family and for sharing those superb hairstyles of J2'sJ Your daughter has such lovely hair and its SO LONG and healthy, you’ve accomplished some styles that I wouldn’t be able to because of Diva R's thickness and length KUDO's to you J Your boys have awesome springy curlee’s also <3 It has been a pleasure featuring your family on our blog and it was a pleasure getting to know You, J1, J2, and J3. My daughter is the same way about hair time, a good portion of the time LOL But she has definitely gotten better from beginning of times. The results are what makes it worth her “inconveinence” As she is a Diva and all. We also swear by finger detangling it makes hair time more enjoyable that’s for sure *_* I must say I am impressed by your creativity with the hair styles , your styles turned out just GORGEOUS and most positively stunning, i will be considering re creating the twisted braided pony tail :) or maybe them all they are so gorgeous!.
