Topsy Tail Created Quadruple Pig Tails

Here is a traditional style tweaked into an eye catching unique style. Before i began i gathered our Topsy Tail Styling Tool and a few of our regular products...

I began styling on her damp freshly washed, conditioned, and moisturized hair which was detangled prior too adding our styling product. I split her hair down the middle and then i parted a cross-sectional part creating 4 pig tails.

I loosely put rubber bands on each of the four sections. Just loose enough so that they are able to be flipped inside themselves via the styling tool.

I took the Topsy Tail and slipped each pig tail through the loop individually with the pointed end being slid through the bottom up towards the top of the pig tail.

For lack of better explaining these are just simple pig tails flipped inside out so that they lay flatter and are more discretely rubber banded than the traditional pig tails.

I always like adding unique flare to styles and this one turned out cute girly, simple, quick and unique all wrapped up in a cute little box together <3

I left her curls freely hang in their natural state from the pig tails...

This was the style that she wore for her Valentines Day Party at school and in total it took 20 minutes to create and i topped it off with our light hair moisture spray and it was complete.

Happy Styling!!

Curls Like Us Curl Cloth's REVIEW

Curls Like Us Curl Cloth Review

Back a while ago we had received a sample set of these Curl Cloths by Curls Like Us and have spent lots of time trying them out and i feel that I've gathered enough from using these so that i can provide a thorough and detailed review on them.

I had stumbled upon Curls Like Us via an incoming Twitter Request and i was intrigued so i had checked out their website and to my surprise these Curl Cloths were something completely new to me and we have yet to come across anything like them. So i had to jump in and see what these were about. We were sent these Cloths and i couldn't have been more excited to be able to try these out, the colors we received were Pink & Green trimmed...

Here is a bit about Curl Cloths snipped from Curlslikeus.com and the link to learn more and/or buy them <3
Curls Respond to Kindness

My quest to discover the ideal way to care for my curls took years of experimenting with all the latest products and methodologies as well as reading everything I could find on the subject. Finally, I uncovered a common theme: “Curls Respond to Kindness”. They do not respond well to being; tugged at with brushes, confined into turbans, scorched with hot irons, or washed with harsh cleansers. And surprisingly, they don’t appreciate being roughened up by abrasive terry towels either. Who knew?

A T-shirt?

Once, while on a business trip to New York City, I had the opportunity to have my hair cut and styled at a salon that focused exclusively on curly hair. To my surprise, after washing my hair, the stylist used paper toweling to remove excess water from my hair. He said he preferred using an old t-shirt but that was not allowed at this upscale salon. He went on to further explain to me that traditional terry cloth towels have too course of a texture to them. Not only can this texture disrupt the natural “s” formation of your curls it can roughen up the hair which can cause breakage, split-end, frizz and even inhibit your hair’s ability to shine. As I looked into this philosophy more deeply I found that there were many salons, websites and even magazines that were recommending the use of t-shirts on curly hair.

Not all T-shirts are Created Equal

It took some testing time but, eventually I discovered that not all t-shirts yield the desired result, since T-shirts come in so many different weights, weaves and fabric types. Once I finally found one I liked, it wasn’t long before I grew tired of the look of an old t-shirt hanging off the shower door. With so much press in the “curl world” about the benefits of using a t-shirt why couldn’t I just buy a towel made out of the optimal t-shirt material?

This is when I decided to create my own product. The Curls Like Us Curl Cloth. This absorbent material removes just the right amount of moisture, while setting your favorite styling product into the hair. Its smooth surface prevents the cuticle from getting roughened up and maintains the hair’s natural curl formation. The result is well- defined, shiny curls without the frizz. Even better, it seems to complement almost any type of styling product. It’s even made using a brown colored material so it doesn’t show any discoloration from hair dye.

The word spread much quicker than we had anticipated. After being on the market only a few months, we sold through our first order. Initially we we’re selling mostly to consumers. Now the bulk of our orders come from salons owners nationwide who realize their benefit and want to use them on clients as well as have them available to purchase.

My related work experience

Over the years, I have held several positions with one of a largest hair care companies, Helene Curtis. Then went on to gain additional experience in marketing, brand management and product development with other consumer product companies including; Nu Skin International, N.V. Perricone and Pfizer. Although my professional background has been quite advantageous, I have found that my own personal research and testing has been invaluable.

Our Review

Color: Brown with Pink/Green Trim
Texture/Material: Very soft almost organic feeling/Surprisingly 100% Cotton
Cost: $24.95 for a set of 2 cloths

When i got these in the mail i was surprised at how quick the package came <3 I read the directions of use and decided i was going to wash these before first use so I unfolded the Curl Cloths and snapped a few pics of them in their laid out positions. These pictured were pre-wash and are open ended on both sides.
See the softness of this cloth? Its not your overage 100% Cotton I'm sure of that, its way softer and i was already liking it just that quick.

I decided to let these cloths air dry after being washed because dryers are known to wear materials out quickly and when it comes to hair wear i always use this method to prolong life of the items. I began using these right away following every shampoo day which is about every 2-3 days unless her hair is styled. The directions say to use the Curl Cloth following your application of Curl Enhancer product in the shower after you thoroughly wash out the shampoo. This Cloth is meant to help squeeze and keep the moisture and enhancer in abundantly without the ravaging effect of trying this with a towel, terry cloth or like material.

I chose to put both of my hands through each side of the cloth so that i could move around and squeeze all side of her curls as the cloth is absorbing excess water and product while keeping whats needed in the hair actually and purely on the hair/scalp without removing the moisture that i am trying to get in. The cloth began to get dark brown in color as i was squeezing showing that it is soaking in what is too much in quantity on her hair.

Here is an after pic of using the Curl Cloth and Dejas Hair Milk as the Curl Enhancer...

Here are some views and different angles of another use of the Curl Cloths and this time around i decided to use the Blended Cutie Jelly Cream as the Curl Enhancer as i wasn't too pleased with the resulting feel from using the Dejas as an enhancer since it is actually a hair milk.

I can visibly see that products like the Jelly Cream have instantly amazing results along side the Curl Cloth and its magic moisture maintenance.

Here is the after math <3

Below are a set of pictures as i am squeezing the curls with the Cloth after i had applied our enhancing product of choice. Notice her curls just springing up!

After i use the Curl Cloth i always let her hair air dry the rest of the way and below are some pics of what her curls looked like a few hours after...

Her curls were super springy and superbly soft and bouncy...

Overall i was thoroughly impressed with Curls Like Us Curl Cloths and i am thankful that i took time to look into them because i believe these are truly amazing and hold true to every claim and intent. Prior to using these i was using towels and i would just squeeze the water/product into her hair with one of those and i thought i was doing right by her curls by doing it this way since i wasn't rubbing but since i have stopped doing it that way Ive noticed a tremendous change in her curls health and bounce. Ive learned that the material used when the hair is wet and in its most fragile state is crucial to not causing damage or further damage to the hair. I LOVE these cloths when i am doing my hair in the wet look too i just grab it and scrunch and go and my hair stays defined and scrunched throughout the day without the heavy hold of too much product or gels.

Yay for Curl Cloths, these would be a great addition to any/all households with varying hair type's and texture.

Thank God Im Natural Dual Review

Thank God Im Natural

We are hugely supportive of close to home companies and TGIN is one of those <3 So while i was searching for the perfect "natural" T-shirt for my Diva to wear i came across a super cute one on Thank God I'm Natural's Web Shop and ordered it immediately! I must say the very first time that i seen TGIN was at Naturally Flyy Detroit's Anniversary Hair Meet Up and it was a pure blessing in itself. They had everything from clothing-hair/skin products and nothing screams natural more clearly than adding GOD into the mix, that is what caught my eye immediately and through this day TGIN is the ONLY company selling natural items who highlights God and naturalness together in the hair world...
So thereafter we bought the shirt i had become increasingly interested in the Thank God I'm Natural Ultimate Guide to Caring for and Maintaining Natural Hair Book, after seeing reviews and evident hype over this i had figured that i should dive on in :) So Kathy/Jackie from TGIN had thoughtfully blessed us with a copy of the book and a copy to giveaway in our very next giveaway (stay tuned)...
Needless to say i have been taking my time to read this guide from front to back twice over making sure that i didn't miss any juicy details <3
So to begin with here is my Diva proudly wearing her Thank God I'm Natural Girls Shirt <3 She loves this shirt so much and it was also a huge hit at church as well, not to mention everywhere else we went... Its always so hard for me to buy shirts and such online for my Diva because her torso is longer and she is tall/skinny too so i went with the 4/5 size and the shirt is 100% cotton. The style of the shirt is a regular type unisex style T-shirt and at the time i believe i paid 14.99 plus shipping.

This was a great find in our book and i definitely recommend this super cute shirt for all the little Divas. There are also super cute and rockin women's shirts!!!

Our Review

Type: Paper Back
Cost: $14.99

I do not even know where to begin with this review as i seriously skimmed the book first and then i read section by section at least twice or more over. I knew what i was getting myself into before i even dove in. At first i decided to gather some ideas about what i would expect from a book like this as well as some things that i would hope to read or learn from reading it. I came up with a list with some of the following...

*I hoped to gain some new insight on specific ingredients, product ingredient combinations specific to desired goals, new styling ideas and explanations of hair terminologies.

*I hoped to get some of my questions and dilemmas answered and resolved regarding natural hair and some various aspects of it.

*I wanted to gain some new resources that i could pass on to others as well as gain from myself.

*I was searching for clarification regarding relaxers, old school hair care methods, and the hair typing systems.

The above mentioned are only some of the things that i had in mind as there were tons of ideas and still new wonders daily that i think about or require more knowledge on... I cannot say what chapters are my favorite BUT i can say that the product recipes are some of the most fascinating as well as the break down of faux natural products and ingredients. I really liked the various links and shops listed which cater to natural hair and i seriously have to keep going back to chapters in this book because my mind just cannot retain all of the abundant levels of knowledge inside at once!!!!

In my opinion this amazing guide is wonderful for beginners through and beyond professional level individuals as there is so much information, knowledge, insight and tips/tricks to benefit from not a person is left out of gaining. I am especially thrilled at the complex dissection of the hair follicle and components there of. My expectations were thoroughly met and then some. Also compared to some other natural hair books the cost of this one is extrordinarily affordable and for the knowledge within is a must have in EVERYONE'S hair care regime.

I seriously have never been much of a reader unless i absolutely had to read something and i have always preferred to be more active and physical with my activities BUT this book is a definte regime changer for me (aside from my FAV manual being the Holy Bible KJV). I have yet to get bored with reading this and i forsee a growth in knowledge each time i return back to reading it.

The description of the book doesnt do it justice let me tell you there is MUCH MORE to this amazing guide to natural hair than the summary illudes :) I suggest you splurge on this guide as you will not regret it! Ive learned tons of new elements and tricks to perfect and switch up my daughters hair routine and i will be trying some of the product recipes. Ive gained several new sets of resources that i was unaware of before. It was refreshing to learn that there are several natural hair salons local to me too <3

Valentine's Day Topsy Tail Created Heart and Natural Curls Combination Hairstyle

Happy Valentine's Day everyone!!! Here is yet another Valentine's Day hairstyle for the fellow Divas out there <3 I had already posted this one on our Face Book page and i had received the idea from one of the fellow amazing hair blogs i just forget which one(s) so if YOU have done this prior too i will gladly mention with credit <3

This style is "Topsy Tail" created and it begins with a half pony tail. After i pony tailed half of her hair i split the section into two even parts and i braided them individually creating two braids from the pony tail as shown below...

This is where the Topsy Tail tool comes into play... I do not know if there are modern versions of these as i have not seen any. This is one I've had since i was young that i had found un used in my misc boxes of things. I figured i would get it out and start playing with it!

Then i put the two braids through the hole on the Topsy Tail and centered the pick end underneath her pony tail and pushed the braids up through the pony tail to where they were then in a "water-fall" fashion one on the left and one on the right. I had two bobby pins handy and i molded each braid into a left and right forming a heart between the two and i used 1 bobby pin on each side to hold the heart in place. Then i rubber banded the two ends together as pictured below...

Here is a close up of the braided heart <3

I was going to leave her hair just like that with no addition but i decided that since i had so much hair in the top pony tail it thinned out her bottom section so i decided i would pony tail it with the top section remainder and adorn it with one of our new Valentine bows from Cute N Curly Bowtique <3

I used our distilled water spritz, Darcy's Botanical's Curl Styling Cream and Pure Jojoba Oil (which i will be reviewing shortly)...

The Jojoba Oil i used lastly as a sealer and moisture retainer and i used just over a nickel size amount along side a few spritzes of distilled water for dilution.

These are the bows we were blessed with for Valentines Day <3 <3 <3

This style was simple and quick and its super easy, no skill needed. This one is one of my favorite hairstyles that we did this year as of yet.

Proclaim Rubber Band (Clear) Review

These are the rubber bands that are "specifically" made for hair styling and braiding that lots of people have been raving about. For some time now i have tried the Proclaim bands at various points for various styles and have tried the colored ones as well as these clear ones pictured. I decided that it was time to review the bands so that i can give some insight on them for those interested in buying these and those who have or have had these.

Here is what the rubber bands look like up close...

These are the transparent "non-breakable" hair bands.

Product Description
  • Extremely flexible

  • Soft and gentle

  • Will not break hair

  • Will not snag

  • Easy to remove

  • Proclaim Professional Braiding Rubber Bands helps to braid hair, keeping braids tight and neat.

Proclaim Professional Braiding Rubber Bands won't snag or pull on hair and won't cause breakage. Soft and flexible for easy use when styling.

    Our Review

    Color: Clear
    Texture/Consistency: Glossy and smooth
Cost: $1.19 per 250 count (at Sally Beauty)

Ok so we have used this for cumulatively several months over the last few years and have been bought mainly for curiosity purposes, convenience, and for certain style ideas. We have put these to many tests and have used them enough to provide a thorough review. I have seen good and bad reviews on these all over the web and found it interesting how many people prefer and recommend these. See below this picture of the maximum length that these rubber bands can be stretched to... I decided to show the length beside a wide tooth comb so you can get the general idea of its stretching capacity.

One may think that this is generous by looking at the picture. I will begin by saying that in my opinion these rubber bands are fair priced and since I'm a beauty club member at Sally's i got these for .99 cents for the 250 count pack so i felt either way i couldn't complain. This clear pack of rubber bands i bought particularly for some of the wacky hair day, holiday styles which required "concealing" of the band colors.

I can say that i was really counting on these bands to hold up especially when i used them for beading and when constructing a style that i didn't want to move out of place. I am displeased at the fact that these snap at a drop of a dime, not only do these not function 100% like regular rubber bands used in hair but i found that they are not reliable to use when using beads, fellow accessories or for securing either. It didn't matter whether i chose to use products alongside using these bands or not these snapped each and every time applied. When i was trying to use these as pony tails i found that their wrapping power is very minimal and in fact lots of times they snapped in mid wrapping. I began to double wrap the bands using two bands and they STILL broke.

I can believe the non-damaging to hair claim because of the slip they provide grip-wise BUT with one easy tug on the hair or snagging on clothing these can snap right out of place and will undoubtedly lose any beads regardless of tension applied. Most of the time i couldn't even get to finish the style i was working on before they started snapping. I couldn't even wrap one of these rubber bands around my hair twice without it snapping seconds later. I can say that i had the same problem with the brown, black, colored and clear proclaim bands separately as well. They couldn't withhold any test and i sure couldn't depend on these at all to last at all.

I'm unsure as to what the hype is all about with these as i am positive that these are terrible in performance and endurance and are partly un-true in the claim that is made. I will not make the mistake of buying these in the future regardless of convenience.

Magic Leverag Curls On Diva R

Ive been asked alot about my daughters hair and "how i create her ringlet curls" amongst many other variations of that questions so here is the answer as plain as i can give it to someone. I do NOT create her curls her curls are the curls she was born with and God is the creator of them. With that being said there are only a few exceptions and things i have done to "create" varying curls aside from her God given blessings.

This is the ONLY type of exception that i will make when it comes to creating variations naturally on her hair as we are opposed to heat, chemicals and permanent alterations. I have yet to venture out into the pipe cleaner or nylon curls but i was intrigued by the Curlformers set and was even more shocked that there were knock off versions of those. When i found this news out i ordered some of the knock off sets since i really didn't want to splurge and end up wasting alot of money like i have in the past.

So i went on Ebay and found some of the Magic Leverag Curlers and in case you missed the results and the experiment on myself from shortly after we got them feel free to reflect here...

So i have concluded that these are NOT damaging and proceeded to try them on my sweet daughter. Since i thought these were uncomfortable sleeping with i nearly knew she wouldn't go for it so i decided to give these a whirl in the mid day so that they would have time to "set" and i could remove them before bed.

The size that you see were the only size available when i purchased the set so aside from the real small ones which were included, the ones pictured are the biggest of the set. The set is not long enough for Diva R's hair so i had to improvise the best i could and i decided to make sure that i covered her ends and as far up as i can go with the curlers. If your curious as to how these go on or any of those types of specific questions refer to my above linked reflection post for more detail.

I used a total of 19 curlers and i put these in with her hair being completely dry and with no use of special products. I have read tons of reviews that say that the best results come from using the curlers on dry hair without any special alterations or products. I have found from using these on my own hair being wet and dry that the hair being wet just doesn't set well with these. So earlier in the day i had applied some curly butter and distilled water after she woke up for curl revival and detangling purposes and throughout the day her hair was un touched up until i applied these.

I loaded these individually onto the hook and in about 10 minutes i had all 19 in place and ready to rock and roll. My sweet Diva really liked wearing these and couldn't help but shake them all about. She LOVED these as a matter of fact and couldn't wait to see what they were going to do. I left them in for a few hours and they stayed in place very well without help or re application.
When bed time came around this was the real test as i have heard of kids not minding these in over night as they slept.

I put her cap on and she went to bed. About 3 minutes later she was calling for me so i went in and she said she didn't want to sleep with those in her hair that they were uncomfortable. I tried a few repositioning's and took off her cap and interchanged the cap with the satin pillow case and it didn't please her so i had to take them out and below are the results of what the curls looked like after having a few hours to set in... The first picture is before i separated and tossled them...

As you can see if the curlers were longer she would have had vibrantly created curls from root to tip.

I began to play with the curls a bit and separate them to try and fill in the gaps...

Next time i will use alot more curlers and experiment with end wraps and maybe setting lotion to see if we can get some varying results. Either way she was pleased and i think that if i would have pulled these up in a pony tail style they would have been like loose barrel curls, cute and different from her adorable sharpie size beauties.

I kind of believe if we had the curlformers we would have had better results as well, you kind of get what you pay for.

This was a fun and simple and quick experiment which we will continue to have fun with and now i am on a hunt for longer ones!

Reindeer Christmas Hair Style and Sock Bun Tutorial

I am sooo backed up on styles so i am trying to hurry and present these Christmas ones before i get to the rest and this one in particular i had seen over at Princess Piggies. Lately i have been searching for new style ideas and since my daughters hair is more easily done now that its longer and maintained well i can venture out into styles i wasn't able to do years ago.

This version of the Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer is what i would like to consider our Curly Version of the one we seen. Below are the constructed Reindeer pieces that form the whole Reindeer face alongside the rolled sock which completes the nose/face.

    In total i gathered...
-5 bobby pins (any type of bobby pins will work)
-Red puff ball/pom pom (found in all craft isles)
    -2 brown pipe cleaners
    -Sharpie
-1 small section of a random piece of cardboard box that i had laying around that happened to be white for the eyes.
-Hot glue (if your doing this style like i did i suggest using only super glue or hot glue as the eyes will not stay together if you use different glue or adhesive)
    -2 elastic bands/pony tails
    -1 rubber band
    -Rolled sock
    -Tangle Teezer
    -Fine tooth comb
    -Scissors
*Bee Mine Luscious Balanced Cream Moisturizer
    *Shea Moisture Mist

It seems like alot but really its not and this style is very easy to create and you do not need any special type of skill to do so. You just need two hands :) I will begin with instructing on how to create a rolled sock for the sock bun portion of this style.

So many people have questions about how to do this without having to buy a pre-formed mold and its easy peasy.

*First you begin with a sock that you do not plan on wearing on your foot again. You have to have a pre planned idea of how big you want the rolled sock to be before you begin. For example if your daughter has long hair you would want a bigger formed rolled sock. If your daughter has shorter hair you would want to create a smaller in diameter rolled sock. For thin or smaller rolled socks you can begin with dress socks or slacks and work your way up thickness wise depending on your preference, for lots of hair or long hair you could try beginning with cotton socks or thicker type winter socks. So since my daughter has somewhat longer hair i opted for a warm fuzzy sock that is THICK and typically worn in cold climates. These types of socks roll BIG. See below the type of sock i used.

I have the sock pictured above AFTER its been cut to my desired length and its comparison alongside the sharpie is to illustrate the size of the sock after being cut. The sock was originally a women's sock which was for size 8-10.

*Secondly, i cut the toe off and about 2 inches beyond the toe leaving the mid sole of the sock left and the full length of the ankle/leg portion.

*Thirdly, i cut about 4 inches off of the leg portion of the sock leaving about 6 inches worth of sock give or take.

THEN the sock was ready to roll into a bun... See below the fashion that i chose to roll the sock into.

I began rolling one side a few times into itself and then stopped in the middle and began rolling the opposite end of the sock in towards the center until the centers met...

Then i simply folded the two sides together creating this doughnut!

I like doing it this way so that there are no loose ends or ankle parts or ends sticking out of the rolled sock. Some people like to begin rolling the sock from one side until it cant roll anymore and that is fine too just make sure that there is NO ankle part left on the sock nor frayed edges because the sock bun can completely bubble out or be defective if done sloppy or improperly. If you do either method on a new sock your chances of having issues are slim to none but older socks can propose challenges.

So here is how you put the rolled sock into the hair... Begin with a regular tight pony tail (not so tight that you stress the hair)...

Then you slip the rolled sock onto the pony tail as if you were going to put another pony tail on to the hair...See below...

As you can see how i have hair separated on top and bottom of the rolled sock above i began there and i spread the two sections out amongst the rolled sock so that her hair was evenly covering the sock mold. I then put an elastic band around the hair and mold and her hair then formed the sock bun appearance.

Then comes the fine tuning of the sock bun... I use a fine tooth comb for this part because i like to make sure the sock bun is somewhat perfect and tighter i smoothed the hair that is around the sock mold out nicely down into the underneath part of the sock mold so that you do not see any part of the sock showing through. I then tucked the remaining curls under the bun with my fingers and it was just that quick and easy. I applied the second elastic band for extra security and fine tuning. I will explain at the second part of this post about another method of maintaining the loose hairs around the sock bun.

THE REINDEER creation! Take a look at the picture first and then i will explain...

This set of pics are from the first run through of creating this style. I began with creating a simple regular pony tail and i applied some Bee Mine Luscious Balanced Cream Moisturizer to her WET hair prior too creating the pony tail. As i was doing the pony tail i applied some more Luscious to her edges to help slick the hairs back and create a smoother look. I then created the sock bun as i mentioned above.

Now, the pieces that i pictured above that make up the Reindeer face are self explanatory pretty much. I freestyled the eyes by cutting 4 circles out of the card board and gluing one bobby pin between two card board circles per eye formation so that the bobby pin is "sandwiched" between for security. Then i drew the eyeballs on with the sharpie. For the red puff ball i just slid the bobby pin through the center of the ball, no glue needed. If you need the antlers broken down i will gladly explain if you leave a comment below.

I just stuck all the pieces in place and no force was needed at all. (nor would i do anything that requires force.)

Isn't the completed style cute as a button??? I'm telling you this was a huge hit everywhere we went! I could not believe the raves we got from this. People of all ages from children to great grandparents everyone LOVES this cute and festive style! It stayed in place all day too not a need in the world for touch ups.

Here is the front view <3

Now here is part 2... I had to do this style again because the reviews were out of sight and my sweet Diva requested it again. This time around i did the same exact thing as above besides the method that i chose to tuck in the surrounding hair around the sock bun. I didn't think i could twist the remaining hair around the bun forming rows of rolled twists but i was able to pull it off!

If you look at the set of pictures below you will see the rolled twists around the sock bun instead of the hair being tucked completely under the bun. This in my opinion gives it a more 3D look. I was shocked that this worked! Its not that easy to do this on curly hair as it is straighter hair types. With the help of a few more bobby pins i was able to pull this off to a T and it turned out super cute.

I made the antlers a little taller as well as thicker at the bottom so they would stay in place firmly through dress up times and rough play at school.

My sweetheart loves her hair and asks me all the time how i am going to style her hair along with requests from her and new ideas! I am addicted to taking proper care and styling my sweet daughters hair <3
